About

Gin Rocks Press is a publishing venture of Douglas Hunter, registered in the province of Ontario as a sole proprietorship. It is bringing to market new non-fiction works by him and will make available updated versions of ones previously published by trade presses. The first new title, Frightful Disaster!,is now available.

Douglas Hunter has enjoyed a long career as a writer, illustrator, and graphic designer. As well as being the author or co-author of more than twenty works of non-fiction published by leading trade and academic presses in North America, he has provided maps and illustrations for his own books and those of other authors. He packaged three of his own books — A Breed Apart (1995) and Champions (1997) for Penguin Books Canada, and Yacht Design Explained (1998, with coauthor Steve Killing) for W.W. Norton. Those projects involved writing, illustrating, designing, and assembling the finished product. He was also the designer of artist and writer Allen Smutylo’s Wild Places Wild Hearts, named Best Adventure/Travel Book (2007) at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. He also designed Allen’s latest book, Gold of Another Kind (2025).

In launching Gin Rocks Press, Douglas Hunter is returning to his packaging glory days, to oversee all aspects of his own book’s creation. His goals is to tackle subjects that are engaging, with prose that is accessible and research that is impeccable, and with images and graphic design that enrich the reader experience. Gin Rocks Press will prioritize the creation of books as physical objects, but will make titles available as e-books.
